Trump tries to bounce back after horrible day damages presidency

FBI의 급습에 의한 로저 스톤(트럼프 친구&정치적 조언자)의 체포, 트럼프의 예산안 서명 등 숨막히는 정치상황이 지나가면서 트럼프의 패배로 끝나는가 했다.

하지만 트럼프는 3주는 금방 지나간다고 트윗하면서 장벽을 포기하지 않았음을 과시했고, 공화당전국위원회(RNC, e Republican National Committee)는 2020년 대선에서 트럼프의 재선을 지지한다고 결의했다.

For a few hours, it looked like the foundations of Donald Trump's presidency were crumbling in plain sight.

Trump has put on such a show of neck-whipping drama and barely believable controversy that it's tough to identify his worst day in office.

But history could come to see Friday -- when the President plunged to a humiliating defeat in the partial government shutdown and an FBI team sent by Robert Mueller swooped down on his political sorcerer Roger Stone -- as a turning point.

As Venezuela's two presidents face off, children scavenge for food and soldiers run out of patience

니콜라스 마두로 베네수엘라 대통령은 1월 10일 두번째 임기를 시작했으나 악화일로의 경제, 부정선거논란으로  퇴진압박에 시달리고 있다. 이 와중에 후안 과이도 국회의장이 1월 11일 자신이 임시대통령임을 선언함에 따라 한나라에 대통령이 두명인 상황이 벌어졌다.

이 웃지못할 상황이 국제사회로 번지면서 문제가 커지고 있다. 트럼프 미대통령과 EU가 과이도의 손을 들어주고 있는데 반해, 베네수엘라의 우방인 러시아, 중국, 쿠바, 볼리비아등은 마두로의 손을 놓고 있지 않다.

This hillside community is where President Nicolas Maduro has nurtured his base of poor Venezuelans, trading vital state handouts for loyalty. Yet last week, night after night, locals have clashed with police special forces. On the afternoon we visited, armed forces were raiding homes and taking away residents.

Pompeo announces suspension of nuclear arms treaty with Russia

1987년 미국과 소련은 군비경쟁 억제 및 핵무기감축을 위해 핵탄두장작이 중단거리 미사일 폐기를 골자로 한 중거리핵전력조약(Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty)에 서명했다.

하지만 몇년전부터 미국은 러시아가 신형미사일을 개발하여 조약을 위반하고 있다고 러시아를 압박했고 러시아는 이를 부인해왔다. 

조약존속을 위한 협상이 계속되었으나 합의를 이뤄내지 못했고, 국무장관인 마이크 폼페이오가 조약이행중단을 선언했다.

불이행 선언 6개월이 지나면 자동적으로 탈퇴효력을 갖는다고 한다.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Friday that the US is suspending the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, a key pact with Russia that has been a centerpiece of European security since the Cold War.

"For years, Russia has violated the terms of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty without remorse," Pompeo said, speaking from the State Department. "Russia's violations put millions of Europeans and Americans at greater risk."

"It is our duty to respond appropriately," Pompeo said, adding that the US had provided "ample time" for Russia to return to compliance.
